Committee Service

Faculty Governance Committees:

Select committees that may be of interest to APWIMS members are described below. For a full list of committees that fall under the Office of Faculty Governance, click here.

If you are interested in serving on one of the committees that appoint its members, you may contact the Chair of the committee to express an interest. If you are interested in serving on one of the committees that appoints its members, the secretary of the faculty announces the opening of the nomination period to all members of the voting faculty. The announcement invites voting faculty members to express interest in being nominated and to recommend others.  In addition, the Nominating Committee identifies and recruits faculty members who are willing to stand for election. The Nominating Committee provides the secretary of the faculty with  nominees for each vacancy.  Please direct any questions you may have about elected membership to Katie Turner (facultygov@unc.edu).

Committee on Appointment, Promotion and Tenure (elected)

The committee is advisory to the provost in any faculty personnel matter deemed important by the provost or the committee, and particularly with respect to:

  1. appointments, reappointments, and promotions that have the effect of conferring permanent tenure;
  2. promotions to a higher rank of persons holding permanent tenure at the rank of associate professor or assistant professor;
  3. appointments to distinguished professorships that are not restricted by the terms of the endowment to a particular school or department.
  4. review of school and departmental statements of criteria for appointment, promotion, and tenure.

Faculty Welfare Committee (appointed by Chair of Faculty)
Chair: Tim Ives (timothy_Ives@med.unc.edu)
The committee monitors and works toward the improvement of faculty working conditions, including salaries and benefits.

Committee on Fixed-Term Faculty (appointed by Chair of Faculty)
Chair: Nancy Fisher (nancy_fisher@med.unc.edu)
The committee addresses concerns and makes policy recommendations on matters specific to fixed-term faculty members, including, but not limited to, working conditions, status, and professional advancement.

Committee on the Status of Women (appointed by Chair of Faculty)
Chair: Margot Stein (margot_stein@.unc.edu)
The committee addresses ongoing concerns of women faculty members, identifies obstacles to achievement and maintenance of equality in the representation and status of women on the faculty, and proposes steps for overcoming those obstacles.

Faculty Grievance Committee (elected)
The committee is authorized to hear and advise with respect to the adjustment of grievances of all persons designated as members of the Faculty by the Trustee Policies and Regulations Governing Academic Tenure and those librarians who are members of the General Faculty. The power of the committee is solely to hear representations by the persons directly involved in grievances, to facilitate voluntary adjustment by the parties, and to advise adjustment by the administration when appropriate. Advice for adjustment in favor of an aggrieved faculty member may be given to the chancellor only after the dean, department chair, or other administrative official most directly empowered to adjust it has been given similar advice and has not acted upon it within a reasonable time.

Committee on Community and Diversity (appointed by Chair of Faculty)
Chair: Rumay Alexander (rumay@email.unc.edu)
The committee is responsible for fostering community and promoting pluralism in the University by encouraging social interaction, mutual acceptance, and respect among various groups on campus. The committee is especially attentive to matters generated by discrimination on the basis of age, race, gender, disability, religion, socio-economic status, national or ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.

Each spring the secretary of the faculty establishes a schedule for conducting elections for the elective standing committees.

Education:

Education Committee (elected)
Responsibilities: The Education Committee has responsibility for the overall design, management, and evaluation of the medical student curriculum including the following:
1. Logical sequencing and horizontal and vertical integration of the curriculum.
2. Curricular content, methods of pedagogy and medical student assessment that are appropriate for achievement of the school’s educational objectives.
3. Program evaluation using multiple measures including national norms of accomplishment.
The group of faculty, students, and staff that provides central oversight for the four years of medical school curriculum.

Admissions Committee (experienced interviewers)
Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Admissions Committee of the School of Medicine include the following:
1. Evaluate candidates for admission to the MD program of the School of Medicine.
2. Select from these applicants individuals to be offered admission to the School of Medicine. The final decision for admission of students into the MD program rests with the Admissions Committee.
3. Evaluate transfer candidates for admission to the MD program of the School of Medicine
4. Select transfer applicants to be offered admission to the School of Medicine. The final decision for admission of transfer students into the MD program rests with the  Admissions Committee.

Faculty Wellness:

Wellness Committee
Contact Samantha Meltzer-Brody (samantha_meltzer-brody@med.unc.edu) or Amy Weil (amy_weil@med.unc.edu) if interested in serving on this committee.
The UNC Wellness Committee will coordinate and promote existing wellness efforts; advocate for resources to support wellness; plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive, evidence-based wellness initiatives; and through communication, education and programming, serve as the primary source within the University for encouraging healthy living among its employees.

Advisory Committee
Chair: Dean Bill Roper, MD, MPH
The responsibilities of the Advisory Committee of the School of Medicine include the following:
1. Propose academic policies with and advise the Dean on the handling of administrative matters.
2. Receive reports from other Committees of the Faculty.
3. Refer to the Faculty of the School of Medicine, for discussion and action in open meeting, such questions as it believes require the attention of the entire School’s Faculty. Any member of the Advisory Committee may introduce for discussion at meetings any subject relating to the life of the School of Medicine.
4. Confer the right to vote on members of the Faculty of the School of Medicine not automatically accorded this right in the Constitution, Article I, Section 3 (cf. Bylaws, Article I, Section 4).

Nominating Committee

The responsibilities of the Nominating Committee of the School of Medicine include the following:
1. Develop a slate of candidates who will stand for election to the Standing Committees of the School of Medicine.
2. Review and advise the Dean on proposed decanal appointments to the Standing Committees of the School of Medicine.

Student Progress Committee
Chair: Unknown
The responsibilities of the Student Progress Committee of the School of Medicine include the following:
1. Review of the academic and professional performance of medical students. Based on this review, recommend actions to be taken including dismissal from the School of Medicine.
2. Refer a list of students meeting the school’s graduation requirements to the Dean’s Advisory Committee for approval of receipt of the MD degree.

Committee to Review Appointments and Promotions to Associate Professor (Tenure Track)
Chair: Mark Heise, PhD
Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Committee to Review Appointments and Promotions to Associate Professor (Tenure Track) of the School of Medicine include:
Review of the following:
1.    Initial appointments of tenured Associate Professors
2.    Promotions of Assistant Professors to Associate Professors conferring tenure,
3.    Reappointments of probationary Associate Professors to the rank of Associate Professor with tenure.
4.    Conferral of tenure at the Assistant Professor level.
5.    Review recommendations for joint tenured faculty appointments within an SOM  department for a faculty member whose current tenured appointments are with departments outside of the SOM
6.    Submit recommendations regarding the above noted actions to the Dean’s Advisory Committee for action.

Committee to Review Appointments and Promotions to Full Professor (Tenured)
Chair: Brent Senior, MD, FACS, FARS
Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Committee to Review Appointments and Promotions to Full Professor (Tenured) of the School of Medicine include the following:
1. Review of initial appointments at the rank of Full Professor and all promotions from Associate Professor to Full Professor.
2. Review recommendations for joint tenured faculty appointments within an SOM department for a faculty member whose current tenured appointments are with departments outside of the SOM.
3. Submit recommendations regarding the above noted actions to the Dean’s Advisory Committee for action.

Post Tenure Review Committee
Chair: Joanne Jordan (Clinical) and Williams Marzluff (Basic Science)
Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Post-Tenure Committee include the following:
1. Post-tenure review of Associate Professors deferring a promotion review and not undergoing a full department review
2. Post-tenure review of Full Professors.
3. Post-tenure review of Biomedical Engineering Faculty in conjunction with North Carolina State University.
4. Submit recommendations regarding the above noted actions to the reviewed faculty, the Chair of the department in which the faculty member is primarily appointed and to the Office of the Dean.

Committee to Review Promotions for Fixed Term Faculty
Chair: Muge Calikoglu
Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the Committee to Review Promotions of Fixed Term Faculty School of Medicine include the following:
1. Consider recommendations for promotion of fixed term faculty to both Associate Professor and Full Professor.
2. Submit recommendations regarding the above noted actions to the Dean’s Advisory Committee for action.
